I am finally reasonably happy with the vocal recordings if not with the processing, or the singing, or the lyrics. But working on that. The video was painful, both figuratively and literally; I am clearly too old to crouch on the floor for extended periods and had to hobble stairs for days after the filming.
The number one comment I get on my music videos is, sadly enough, not "wow, you are so amazingly gifted" but "where do you find the time?". To which the answer is "I don't". I did the filming for this video on Christmas, the audio on Easter, and finished on Pentecost. If it wasn't for those Christian holidays, I'd never get anything done. So, thank God, now you know how I pray.
Right on, great video!
ReplyDeleteWow, you are so amazingly gifted.
ReplyDeleteAs M-theory is a Cauchy horizon, so this mellifluous concatenation of aural, visual, graphic, sartorial, and conceptual exposition. What a feast!
ReplyDeleteDamn these Germans. They've always had the best scientists, philosophers, mathematicians and composers, sometimes all wrapped into one.
ReplyDeleteBeing a brilliant physicist isn't enough -- Hossenfelder has to write, sing and make videos as well. But we Americans have Trump, our guns, our arrogance and our stupidity, which seems to be good enough.
👏👏🙏🏻 🌹Loved it!
ReplyDeleteThe image for the video looked pretty harsh - but as I can see in the discussions over at Markus Pössel, the Einstein-hater image of current relativity experts is even worse... :-(

ReplyDeleteBee, i know you're an atheist. but do you ever stop to consider that the reason physics uses highly complicated mathematics is that the universe was the result of some sort of higher intelligence that has a predilection for advance mathematics?
that the reason the universe and physics is written in mathematics is that the creator has an intelligence that encompasses mathematics
Wow, Sabine, you are so amazingly gifted!
ReplyDeleteI think I figured out how you find the time for such videos. When you move into the part of the video where you are transformed into a virtual Sabine, you are in spacetime, and you leverage that into the classical space and time. Voila!
“Creativity is the new prayer”. I like it. I also have one more entry on my list for the utility of religion.
Wow, how much you have improved, Sabine! In one of your earlier recordings I had sarcastically commented not to lose your day job. You have greatly improved your video, audio techniques with kick-ass lyrics to match and can give professional singers a run.
ReplyDeleteThe only nit picking comment I can make is that it sounds like a Gregorian chant with a limited range. I totally enjoyed your creative output.(4/5)
I'm only commenting on what I liked.
ReplyDelete1. Loved the outfit
2. Liked the transition to the animated you
3. Loved and laughed hard at the close up of you bitting in sync to the lyric
Thanks! Made me forget dark matter for a moment.
ReplyDeleteI know you still have time for cultivating your children:
ReplyDeleteYou: "Why is everything on the floor?"
Kids: "Because of gravity, Mutti."
I do not fully understand your music, but John Kay (born Joachim Fritz Krauledat) was born in East Germany, and he was really "Born to be Wild". Rock on!
Bwahahaha ! <3
ReplyDeleteThis may come as a surprise to those who have read some of my other comments on this blog, but I must admit I didn't like this video at all.
ReplyDelete"I do not fully understand your music, but John Kay (born Joachim Fritz Krauledat) was born in East Germany, and he was really "Born to be Wild". Rock on!"
ReplyDeleteActually East Prussia, which now belongs to Russia but is separated from it (the former East Prussia is between Poland and Lithuania). Nothing to do with the "German Democratic Republic", the former "East Germany" which is now part of united Germany.
Significant influence of the '80s, nouvelle vague. Nice.
ReplyDeleteAnother absolutely cool video! Who would have guessed that following a physics blog could be entertaining. Also, as an American, I appreciate how thin you are, so different from what I see in public places here in America. Something like 2/3rds of Americans are overweight or obese. In fact I was shocked to discover this Spring that I had joined that cohort after an extremely cold winter and less opportunity to exercise. With our warm weather of late and outdoor activity the needle on the bathroom scale is now trending counterclockwise.
ReplyDelete"Also, as an American, I appreciate how thin you are, so different from what I see in public places here in America."
ReplyDeleteAfter he returned from the States, I heard someone say "Everything is low-fat, except the people." :-)
Could you post the lyrics? The only thing I caught was "This is how I pray", but have no clue from the video about what "This" is.
ReplyDeleteLiralen,
ReplyDeleteClick on the 'cc' icon in to bottom bar. Also, on the YouTube page the lyrics are in the "info" just below the video. Best,
B.
"the reason the universe and physics is written in mathematics is that the creator has an intelligence that encompasses mathematics"
ReplyDeleteI guess circular arguments can give people the impression that they understand something, but they don't really have any explanatory value. "God did it" is an excuse for not having an actual explanation. How did God do it? Why did God do it? The standard answer is that God is incomprehensible to human intelligence. Well then, God is not an explanation. It is a possible hypothesis, but in the absence of reliable evidence for its (God's) existence, the simpler hypothesis is that the universe itself encompasses mathematics (and its own existence), with no middle-man. Simply replace "God" with "the universe" in any statement such as the above and you have explained as much, or as little.
That is what makes sense to me, anyway. I haven't read a lot of atheist writing, mainly because it seems plain to me already, but I suspect they are saying something like that.
The best answer to life, the universe, mathematics, and everything is still "I don't know."
(Not very profound, it's just one of those things that I think of to think, when I'm thinking of thinking a thing.) (It is a travesty that Dr. Seuss never won the Nobel Prize for Literature.)
I'm surprised that so many people have wasted time even thinking about these "proofs" of God's existence, like that of Anselm of Canterbury:
ReplyDeleteWe can conceive of a perfect being (God).
Such a being would not be perfect if it did not exist.
Therefore, it (God) exists.
Even aside from the fact that this says nothing about whether such a being is anything like the Christian God, it is clearly wrong. Consider the following, similar argument:
The least desirable man in the world can conceive (and probably often does) of the perfect girlfriend for him, a nymphomaniac madly in love only with him.
Such a girlfriend would certainly not be completely perfect if she did not exist.
Therefore, every bloke in the universe has a nymphomaniac girlfriend just waiting to please him; he just has to find her.
Either you believe in God and in the nymphomaniac, or neither. :-)
@Random Thinker "it sounds like a Gregorian chant with a limited range" To criticize is to volunteer.

ReplyDeletethe universe and elementary particles do not have any discernible intelligence. until we find electrons and quarks and photons doing very complex mathematics, the kind of mathematics found in GR and QFT
my "hypothesis" is that the reason mathematics is able to describe physics is that some higher intelligence created it all, one that has a predilection for mathematics and physics
Dr. Bee,
ReplyDeleteOver the years your movies, songs, and occasional hints in the blog, very slowly, compose a picture of what it might be to be you. You alone know that experience. I thank you for being the gifted, courageous woman you are. And I hope you will find whatever it is you seek.
Best.
Neo (actually) said "my "hypothesis" is that the reason mathematics is able to describe physics is that some higher intelligence created it all, one that has a predilection for mathematics and physics"
ReplyDeleteWell, we all have our reasons and hypotheses.
My hypothesis is that the reason much of the universe can be predicted using math is that the universe makes sense, and that math is just thinking (the kind of thinking used to make decisions and solve problems, which is evolutionarily useful), and if a universe makes sense, thinking (guided by evidence) will eventually, bit by bit, be able to predict more and more of it. Whereas if the universe is wholly random or irrational, we wouldn't have been able to evolve in it, and wouldn't be here to think about it.
That doesn't answer the questions of why or how the universe exists, but neither does your hypothesis, it just pushes the questions back one step, to why does your creator like math and how does it make universes, and who made it (who created the creator, if everything that exists needs a creator), and why/how did that higher being make beings who like math and can create universes?
At some point I think one has to be satisfied to admit, "I don't know," and concentrate on issues where there is enough evidence to decide among competing hypotheses, i.e., science.
As my last comment on this issue I will answer my esteemed Uncle Al's question ("So What?"): I don't know.
Didn't expect it, but the video was quite fun to watch!
ReplyDeleteDidn't expect, but that was quite fun to watch! Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteLoved the dandruff scene!
ReplyDeleteyou are very talented but not reassuring; I liked that Hitler picture better

ReplyDelete"Whereas if the universe is wholly random or irrational, we wouldn't have been able to evolve in it, and wouldn't be here to think about it."
can you predict which slit an electron will travel in a double slit experiment, or when a neutron or nucleus decays? or is it truly random?
One can never go wrong with German pop :)
ReplyDeletePS: This time I see only one option for posting comments, namely Google account. In the past I was using Disqus, if I remember correctly. Please don't let the spy be our only option.
Not a bad little show at all. Sort of illustrates the social induced angst of our time.
ReplyDeleteI have always thought that it is possible to create formidable music by feeding a computer program with the correct number sequences. Someday someone will create that program or app and it will become rich. Your voice is very nice.
ReplyDeleteWith respect to the previous topic. I do not know if any of you already heard my idea, which I mentioned to some physicists who worked at SETI. I wrote to them and told them that maybe it would be possible to send messages through space and time if we could create a wormhole and enlarge it a little. Then, through the wormhole, we send compressed messages using a maser beam, or simply through a narrow microwave beam.
Or we could create a powerful little field of temporary distortion and throw a message through it. It is evident that, for the moment, it would not be possible to send people through a force field that distorts the structure of space and time, because the radiation emitted by the tunnel would cause the death and disintegration of a living being.
But the ability to send messages to the past to solve big problems would suffice:
We could save the life of the girl Anne Frank; (The girl who wrote "the diary of Anne Frank).
We could warn the FBI of the Russian hacker attack on social media on the internet, which took Hillary Clinton's presidency.
We could prevent Hitler from coming to power.
We could send the most recent medical discoveries: Vaccines; treatment for deadly diseases such as cancer, etc.
And if we could capture information about the future ... Waww.
After sending my ideas on the subject to the SETI scientists, one of them told me that a meeting of physicists was very close and that he was going to tell them my idea. After the meeting, a physicist published the following scientific article:
https://phys.org/news/2014-05-physicist-wormholes-photon.html
Basically my idea, but omitting the data about the machine. (I commented how it would be possible to create the device) (which, by the way, I do not rule out the possibility of accidentally creating a wormhole too large to devour the atmosphere and the planet, but the one who does not risk does not win. Scientists from the Manhattan project did not know if the explosion of a nuclear bomb would also flush the gases in the atmosphere, they took the risk, and nothing bad happened, that's the spirit!
Sorry for the bad translation of the text. I used the google automatic translator. I am an inventor and writer from Mexico.

Amazing! Completely unexpected! What a treat! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteHelen,
ReplyDeleteThis blog is hosted by Google, I can't change much about the comment options and indeed I did not make any changes. The only options that Google currently offers is "Anyone," "Users with Google accounts," and "Only Members of this Blog" (or no comments at all).
Let me say that I do find it annoying - the comment feature on Blogger has various disadvantage - but I currently don't have the time to look for a better solution.
Belated response to Neo, in case he wanted one.
ReplyDeleteNo I can't, but that's okay. A little bit of randomness is good. Total randomness would mean there were no consistent laws at all, so trial and error (the way evolution works and human progress, e.g. science and design, works) would not work. You could keep doing the same thing and get different results. That's why I wrote. "if the universe is *wholly* random", i.e., in whole, not in part.
A bit of randomness actually helps trial and error. If the trials are random, and a solution exists, you are guaranteed to find it if you keep trying long enough and the number of possible trials is not too infinite. If there is no source of randomness, trials can't be random, and this may limit the search. E.g., if you flip a coin to chose which of two choices to make, and always get heads.
Is there anything you can't do?! Great video!!!
ReplyDeleteI think that, if you allow everyone to comment, then you can reach more people with your ideas. Yes; Many trolls and terrible people will arrive to your blog. But not all are so terrible. And they can choose to ignore the trolls or temporarily return to a different Blog configuration. I have visited Blogger blogs without restrictions and those blogs have thousands of visits. You could do the test for a while at least, and if everything goes well, then continue with the new configuration.
ReplyDeleteWinter,
ReplyDeleteBeen there, done that, no intention to revisit it.
I must say that the video is v german and v good :)
