Today on Google Earth I saw...
"The Naval Amphibious Base (NAB) Coronado is located just across the bay from San Diego, CA. The base is situated on the Silver Strand, between the San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean. NAB Coronado is a major shore command, supporting 27 tenant commands, and is the West Coast focal point for special and expeditionary warfare training and operations. The amphibious base houses Commander Naval Surface Force, US Pacific Fleet, responsible for the training, maintenance and crews of the approximately 90 ships of the Pacific Fleet and Commander Naval Special Warfare Command, US Pacific Fleet. Also located there are most of the Naval Expeditionary and Naval Special Warfare units of the Pacific Fleet as well as the famed Navy Parachute Team, the Leap Frogs."
And here's the design the architect chose for the building:
You find it also on Google Maps.

ReplyDeleteHi Uncle,
ReplyDeleteYou cannot fault a big expensive national program for having one failure.
ah, no. I found this sighting just somewhat amusing, maybe somewhat ignorant. I talked to a (German) friend recently, and we both found it's too bad the Nazi's used the swastika. It's a nice symbol actually, and quite appealing except for its historical burden. Its geometrically easy, high symmetry, is build upon an X or a cross, how ever you like it. Has some similarity to a pin wheel, something of a cloverleaf, a bandaid, or a window.
Its something you scribble easily. I remember various occasions though when people of the older generation in Germany got very upset upon sighting a swastika, same with abbreviations like SS or NS. I've been told not to use these, or I could easily hurt people. I guess this advise is something that will vanish within the next some generations.
Best,
B.
Hindus have used the swastika for time immemorial and continue to do so.
ReplyDeleteHere is a very ancient one:

The swastika is a sun symbol. Plain and simple.
ReplyDeleteYou would be surprised how much of modern religions are based off of ancient sun worship. Thats why you see this symbol being used in cultures all over the world, such as in Tibet or the Hindus.
there is nothing that is not deliberate or symbolic in the field of architecture.
ReplyDeleteI just happen to work on that base and have for a while. If you look a little further the other barracks building are in the shape of planes (B-52's) about to fly over the swastika and bomb it. Just saying.
