CERNism

With the startup of the LHC coming closer, here are some CERNisms

And while everything is ready to go in Geneva, scientists in the USA receive death threats...

  1. Thanks for the links! I'm trying to follow a conference called "Science in the 21st Century" at some Physics Institute in Canada instead of the CERN events ;-).

I've come across a cool link, http://friendfeed.com/rooms/science21, a feed offering kind of a "live coverage" of the talks and discussions, much like a report on radio. I've never seen this before, it's great! The organizer is quoted, with respect to CERN, as having said: "The LHC is turned on on Wednesday. I would be really pissed off if the World ends during my conference."

    Cheers, Stefan

  2. The findings will be wonderful, so will the risks. They are playing with huge amounts of enegy and we only "suppose" what could turn up from that.
I don't really think us neither them know for sure what could this bring nor what the risks could involve.
Their shield, Hawking's Decay, is just an unproven theory.
This october human kind will probably be taking its riskiest step in history.
I'm not afraid, but I think the truth is we are like monkeys playing with TNT.

  3. Anonymous,

What you are saying is complete nonsense. I have no clue where suddenly all these people are coming from who believe the earth is in some risk without even knowing what they are talking about. It is also unproven that the sun will rise tomorrow, that's because you can never prove anything about the future, you can just have plausible explanations based on what you know today. Based on what I know today, I tell you the earth is not going to end tomorrow, and I am perfectly sure all of my colleagues will agree on that forecast.

For more details on the alledged risk, please see our extensive discussion of the issue at The CERN Safety report, Black holes at the LHC, what can happen, Black Holes at the LHC -again and Micro Black Holes.

    Best,

    B.
